When Florida residents need supervision to manage their own medications in an Assisted Living Facility (ALFs) and/or Home care setting, they rely on Med Techs to assist them. The Med Tech certification course provides students with 6 hours of training regarding assistance with self-administration of medications in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) or Home care setting . Southern Technical Institute Med Tech is taught by a Registered Nurse and our curriculum focuses on all aspects of the 2021 Florida laws for assistance with self- administration of medications and medication practices. Medication safety being the top priority.

NOTE: Once you successfully complete the Medication Technician training course, a two hour in-person, hands-on clinical practice session is required to meet the criteria for certification. You must call to schedule the two-hour clinical practice.

  • Florida law and rule requirements with respect to the supervision, assistance, administration, and management of medications;
  • Procedures and techniques for assisting the resident with self-administration of medication including how to read a prescription label;
  • Providing the right medications to the right resident;
  • Common medications;
  • The importance of taking medications as prescribed;
  • Recognition of side effects and adverse reactions and procedures to follow when residents appear to be experiencing side effects and adverse reactions;
  • Documentation and record keeping;
  • Medication storage and disposal.
  • Additional duties allowed under the Florida regulations

 

Training also includes demonstrations of proper techniques with hands-on practice exercises.
