This course provides healthcare providers with an understanding of the unique needs of geriatric and older adult populations and the principles of effective, person-centered care. It discusses normal physical changes associated with aging and common health conditions affecting older adults, including hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, dementia, depression, and urinary tract infections. The course identifies important prevention strategies and describes the healthcare provider’s role in promoting independence, maintaining function, preventing complications, and enhancing quality of life. It also discusses the recognition and reporting of elder abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and financial exploitation. Special emphasis is placed on the role of CNAs and HHAs in observing changes in condition, promoting safety, preserving dignity, communicating effectively with the healthcare team, and providing compassionate care to older adults across a variety of healthcare settings.
